Nordstrom shutters San Diego location

Los Angeles - Specialty retailer Nordstrom just announced plans of shuttering one of its locations in a major city. Its San Diego store, which opened in 1985, will be closing this August.
The store is currently located at Horton Plaza in the beach city. The reason for the flagship’s closure is due to its low performance in sales. After 31 years at this location, the company has decided to call it quits. “There are always tough decisions to make, but in taking a look at the store’s performance and our business needs into the future, we believe this is the best direction to take,” said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom, in a statement. The store’s closure will impact approximately 180 non-seasonal employees. There are nearby locations that the company is trying to have employees relocate too. “We’ve told our people that with opportunities at [Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack], we will have a spot for everyone who wants to stay with the company,” said Nordstrom.
As far as the closure’s impact on San Diego customers, there are still three other operating Nordstroms and four Nordstrom Rack locations in the nearby area. The company will also continue to serve customers through its online site. The retailer only decided on closing this particular location due to its under-performing business. Instead of focusing energy into a store that isn’t doing well, the company is directing its efforts on upcoming, new locations. Nordstrom’s La Jolla location is planning to relocate to a new space in the mall with a brand new design, which is one of the company’s newest upcoming retail improvements. The La Jolla store opened in 1984 and will move towards Fashion Valley.
