Pierre Cardin held his first high fashion catwalk show since 1996 last
night in his own restaurant, in Paris for his label Maxim's de Paris. The show marked Cardin's 60th anniversary of his first own fashion label show and was cleverly orchestrated to occur before Paris's fashion couture week. The men's and women's collection, named 'Maxim's the Night,' was inspired by his life long work and “good moments of celebration.” He told French newspaper Le Parisien, “I was the youngest couturier, I am the oldest now.” However Cardin, who turned 91 this year, has no plans of retiring any time soon and claims that his work is his life and happiness. “While I can, I will continue,” he added.
“I staged fashion shows for 60 years of my life, and now I want to stand on my own, to show when I feel like it. I no longer want to have any obligations,” continued Cardin to WWD, after his show in the back of his restaurant Maxim's, which he acquired back in 1981. “I'm at home here. I can decided what I want. I am free – I don't depend on anyone.”
The fashion show reflected the designers 'space-age' style and love of geometric forms and motifs, featuring pieces such as a women's wide legged trousers and long sweeping dresses accentuated by large shoulder ruffles or bows. “This is a modern collection — nothing too tight at the waist, no buttons or tricky details. It’s free, as free as people and fabric should be,” Cardin told his audience, adding that he would like to see the collection on “happy people dancing.”
He concluded that times were bleak at the moment and he wanted to spread a little joy with the presentation of a party collection, “It takes a good time to party.” Pierre Cardin is one of the oldest couturier still involved in his fashion house and is known for the invention of the 'bubble dress' in 1954.
